Review: Aveeno Nourish+ Shampoo And Conditioner

I’m very picky about what I put on my hair. Actually, that’s partly true. I like trying out new things that I find may make my hair more beautiful and strong but my recent-college-grad budget makes this somewhat difficult.

So I usually leave it up to chance and hope that an affordable and seemingly good hair product can do all it promises. Most of the time I’m left somewhat disappointed. But on rare occasions I find a certain product (or set of products) that not only delivers but also exceeds my expectations…

Enter Aveeno’s NEW Nourish+ Moisturize Shampoo and Nourish+ Strengthen Conditioner.

When it comes to shampoos and conditioners, I’m relatively low-maintenance. I don’t know if it’s due to good genes or what-not, but even though I like it to look decent, I usually don’t pay TOO MUCH attention to my hair. Well, at least not now in my early 20s.

BACK STORY
You see, as a foreigner with “Hispanic” hair, I dreaded my hair while I was in high school and early on in college. OK, maybe “dreaded” is a very extreme word, but it felt something close to it. I bring up the fact that I was/am a foreigner (I’m a U.S. citizen now; am I still a foreigner since I’m not from here originally?) because suddenly I was noticing how other girls with different hair than mine were getting all the attention from the cute guys. (Attending an all-girls private school in Colombia is a great self-esteem booster: none of us would get any extra attention because there weren’t ANY guys! So we were all pretty much equal…)

Anyways, while in high school, a girl whose initials are also AP (and who was also a cheerleader, wore Tory Burch flats and designer glasses and all that–she was a sweetheart though) told a group of us one day she had chemically straightened her hair and that’s what helped her keep it smooth and straight. That was honestly my “aha!” moment –even though I waited until my last year in college to actu so. (More on that in a latter post–maybe.)

In any case, I came to think of smooth, straight hair as sexier than my Latina curls. (Silly me, I know.) And it really took me until my senior year of high school to start valuing and almost flaunting my curls. Suddenly I wanted hair products that would only help them look even more beautiful.

Unfortunately, neither beauty magazines (too much advice!) nor actual store isles (too many products!) helped much. Once in a while I’d find something worthy but I have to admit I don’t pay too much attention to my hair (perhaps unless I’m considering getting highlights or trying on a cool new style.

REVIEW
Which is why Aveeno’s Nourish+ line of hair products couldn’t have arrived at a better time. I think it was unknowingly designed for us gals who aren’t fuzzy about their hair as it only works to moisturize and strengthen the beautiful tresses you already have in as little time as possible. I used to take a long time washing my hair. Not anymore thanks to this duo.

     Shampoo
Would you believe me if I said that this shampoo felt very smooth? “Well, what shampoo isn’t?” you could ask. Actually, you might be surprised. Because this shampoo, I’ve felt, doesn’t leave my hair all crinkly and rough after each use like most other shampoos on the market. Instead it leaves it soft and just ready for its accompanying conditioner. (See below.) My favorite part is that it’s so rich, that if you use just a small quantity, you actually end up getting a lot done (as far as cleansing and moisturizing your hair goes). And even though it’s so rich, it’s still easy to wash off completely, with no residue left over. It literally makes the hair-washing process (for a gal with wavy hair a few in. past her shoulders) a breeze and I fully recommend it.

     Conditioner
Like its shampoo counterpart, the Nourish+ Strengthen conditioner also made combing my hair afterwards a snap. Honestly, I’m not necessarily used to having my hair feel SO SOFT after I apply conditioner and comb it. Ironically, that’s the purpose of conditioner, isn’t it? But I don’t think I had felt this way before. So it was a welcome surprise when I ran my hands down my hair one day after combing it while wet and it didn’t feel like I had left any conditioner in (have you ever had that happen? Ugh…). Rather, it felt as if this conditioner actually worked! And days later, not having applied any product or done anything differently, my hair was still soft.

And I know smell isn’t a legit way to judge a personal care product with mostly synthetic ingredients BUT this shampoo/conditioner duo’s smell is heavenly delightful. It’s a combination of fruity and wheaty, but it mostly brings to mind a midsummer’s berry harvest. Sooo good. (Don’t eat it, though!)
