Find Your Next Best Friend During Adopt-A-Cat Month!

I received no compensation for this post.

A few years ago, a cute cat came over to our house and “adopted” us as his new family. Today, he goes by the name of Simba–a perfect name that means “king” in Swahili, and he’s definitely our household’s king. (Best part is he knows he is and acts like it.)

Since we had only had dogs my whole life, we truly weren’t cat people before meeting Simba. In fact, despite al the many cat videos and memes that’d abound, I didn’t get what all the fuss was about re:them. Clearly, we didn’t know what we were missing because cats truly are perfect–in their own way. And we’re finding it hard every day to not get more feline buddies. (But two dogs and a cat are–at least for now–just what we can handle :).)

If you’re in need of a new best friend, may I suggest you adopt a cat or two+ this month?

Let a shelter pet rescue you.

Here’s why:

In case you didn’t know, June marks a particularly active time for shelters and rescue groups, as it’s the peak of kitten season, when thousands of newborn homeless kittens join other cats available for adoption across the United States. There are cats for every personality in shelters and rescue groups right now (so you don’t have the “I’m not a cat person” excuse!), and with each adoption, the number of healthy and treatable pets who lose their lives in shelters each year declines. Currently, about 2.4 million pets still need to find a home each year!

THE CAUSE

I was contacted by The Shelter Project, a collaborative effort between The Humane Society of the United States, Maddie’s Fund®, and the Ad Council, to ask you all to consider adopting a(nother) pet OR at least spread this adorable initiative via the graphics on this post or my Instagram, Twitter, or Facebook.

Normally, I don’t do free posts. (Aside from the warm fuzzies, I received no compensation whatsoever for this one.) But how could I, a shameless animal lover who’d gladly give her life for the sake of her dogs and cat, decline an opportunity like this? So I ask you, fellow animal lovers, to help me in promoting this cause so that others can find their next best friend(s). Are you in?!

New friends come in all shapes and sizes.
New PSAs created for The Shelter Pet Project by the creators of Garfield and Odie (yes, THAT Garfield and THAT Odie) urge families to make shelters and rescue groups their first stop when looking to get a new pet. On that note, Garfield, Odie, and I invite you to visit TheShelterPetProject.org to see what shelter pets are available in your area. We guarantee you’ll find the purrrfect buddy for you and your family!

OUR STORY

In addition to Simba, we’ve also adopted Snuffy (RIP) when we still lived in Colombia (we brought him here when we moved, and he passed over a decade later :'( ), Sparky (who loved his big brother Snuffy) and, most recently, Skyler, who adores his big brother Sparky and guards me better than anyone ever could. These “pets” are my fur brothers (or my parents’ other children) and our lives wouldn’t be what they are now without them.
